Introduction to the Pride community

Level 1: Foundational knowledge around LGBTQ+ identities.

You’re pretty sure you understand the words lesbian, gay, and bisexual. You’ve heard of the word transgender. But why is there a plus sign at the end of the acronym? And what’s the difference between sexual orientation, gender identity, and gender expression? We need to know what these identities are before we can create safe and inclusive spaces for LGBTQ+ individuals.

This is the bedrock of Diversity and Inclusion initiatives. In this program, we have an introductory conversation about the LGBTQ+ community, vocabulary, and how the components of gender and orientation relate to each other. We use personal stories to illustrate distinctions and create a place where you can ask all of the questions you have – all of them. It is perfect for students, teachers, employees, healthcare workers, athletic departments, communities of faith, and everyone in between.
